Exmoor National Park may be small at 265 sq miles (670 sq km) but it offers an incredible variety of landscapes and wildlife, with wild red deer and Exmoor ponies among its blanket bogs and valley woodlands. A quarter of the park is in Devon and the rest in Somerset, more extensively farmed than Dartmoor and with habitation more widespread. Its long history is charted in some Bronze Age remains: many hills are topped by Iron Age forts or Beaker period barrows, while Tarr Steps is finer than any ‘clapper’ bridge found on Dartmoor.
